Can You Drink the Cup…

As I read about the massacre at Umpqua community college, the word’s of Jesus echo in my mind,

“Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?”

Jesus was asking them if they could stand in the face of death. All the disciples said they could. Those who walked with him, who ate with him, who slept next to him, who asked him to teach them to pray. Those closest to him, said they could drink the cup.

When their Lord was arrested, in the darkest hour, they couldn’t stand in their own strength.

They failed. Even Peter disowned him.

Yet, there in that small Oregon town of Roseburg, as the shooter lined them up and asked, “Are you a Christian?” And pointed his gun at their heads, at least a few young people answered, “Yes, I can drink the cup for you Lord.”

And in the power of the Holy Spirit, they drank the cup.

They tasted its bitterness.

They drank it down.

To them Jesus is sweet and worth the bitterness of the cup. In the end, Jesus’ disciples did drink the cup as he said they would. We will all have to drink the cup, if we are His disciples. But he is worth it.  Taste and see…

Can you drink the cup?
