Easy Prey

sheep-in-the-fold

I once had a guy, who no longer goes to a church, tell me that he still believes in Jesus, but can’t be bothered to join a church because he is just tired of the hypocrisy he sees in the church.

He compared himself to Paul in prison… Now it’s just him and Jesus loving on each other. He is a lone wolf.

Sounds pretty good doesn’t it? Especially if you have been hurt in the church, I get how it can be difficult to want to go back. And it is true that Jesus will be with you, when you are alone in prison, or persecuted, or whatever the case may be…but that is not the way it ought to be.

The problem with this thinking is that Paul, while in Prison, longed to be with other believers. He thanked God for them and prayed for them. He did not desire to be separate from them. And second, there is only one kind of animal that God’s children are compared to. And it ain’t no lone wolf. It is not a cat. It is not a fox, or any other animal that goes it alone.

The only animal we are compared to is sheep. And sheep are kinda dimwitted and completely defenceless.

And a solitary sheep outside all alone is easy prey.

But sheep together in a flock, under the loving and protective hand of a shepherd and a few sheepdogs are much safer.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. ~Hebrews 10:24-25
