What is Your Only Comfort in Life and Death?

What is your only comfort in life and death?  This is a question that is very familiar to Reformed Christians.  It is the first question in the Hiedelberg Catechism.  The ROOTS CanRC Young People hit the streets with this question and recorded the responses.

So, what is your only comfort in life and death?  The catechism teaches us:

That I am not my own, but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death, to my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood, and has set me free from all the power of the devil. He also preserves me in such a way that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, all things must work together for my salvation. Therefore, by His Holy Spirit He also assures me of eternal life and makes me heartily willing and ready from now on to live for Him.

In a world where grieving, hurting, and lost people look for comfort from drugs, alcohol, sex, food, money or entertainment, this message must seem both radical and foolish, but here it is.  Claiming that we are not our own…how can that give me comfort? But knowing that God is in control even when life is not going the way we would like it to, is supremely comforting.  Even when our child dies, when our house burns down, when our spouse cheats on us, when life just plain…sucks – in Jesus is truly where we can find comfort.
