The Church’s One Foundation and John Calvin School

This evening I listened as my 6 year old daughter sang the first verse of one my all-time favorite hymn’s. The churches One Foundation, written by Samuel Wesley:

The Church’s one foundation

Is Jesus Christ her Lord,

She is His new creation

By water and the Word.

From heaven He came and sought her

To be His holy bride;

With His own blood He bought her

And for her life He died.

I did not teach it to her.  No, she learned it in school, since this was her weekly memory work.  I love to hear my kids sing God’s praise, it makes my heart leap with joy and thanksgiving to the Lord.

It is amazing to think that a few years ago we were contemplating sending our kids to public school, simply because we thought we could not afford it.  But not now, now I would never go back.  Sending her to a private reformed Christian school has not been easy for us, we have struggled to make ends meet, but in the end this is what is best for her.  No, I am not so naive as to think that private schools do not have problems, but here at John Calvin School (JCS), she is surrounded by people who love her as a covenant child of God, people who care for her as their own.  When she gets on the bus in the morning she is greeted by a smiling “Mrs. W” the bus driver – Mrs. W sits right behind us in church.  On the morning bus she sits with her church friends and her cousins. On the afternoon bus she is dropped off by “Mrs S” who is the wife of a friend who goes to the church at the other end of town.  Her Kindergarten Teacher was “Mrs. V” who also sits behind us at church.  Her new teacher, “miss” who I do not know very well yet, is also a sister in Christ.  Our Churches Christian Schools are about God and his covenant people.  We are a family, a community of believers and it is so sweet to be a part of.

I thank God for those people who persuaded us to choose JCS for our kids – you all know who you are and I thank God that he used you all to change my mind (and Teresa’s).  JCS’s purpose …is to assist parents to educate their children to develop their talents and potential to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes for a life of responsible stewardship in God’s kingdom.

The amazing thing is that a few years ago I was hesitant to send my child to JCS for purely financial reasons…Now I find myself on the JCS Membership Committee as a rep for the Chilliwack Church.  It is so amazing how God works.  God is good. Soli Deo Gloria.
